June saw the AutonomouStuff team attend shows around the world, including CES Asia and HxGN Live in Las Vegas, in addition to formally launching the Open Autonomy Pilot with a press conference attended by Mayor Jim Ardis in Peoria.
Open Autonomy Pilot
We formally launched the Open Autonomy Pilot at the beginning of June in downtown Peoria, Illinois, with the help of Mayor Jim Ardis and a host of other community-minded folks from the Peoria Area Chamber of Commerce.
Our automated vehicles have been set on a defined route through downtown to gather data and test Autoware software with the goal of refining the autonomous capabilities for partners and other research and development organizations.
The press conference officially announcing the start of the pilot project was well attended and widely covered. We look forward to posting more updates as the project progresses.
HxGN LIVE
The HxGN LIVE event in Las Vegas marked major milestones for AutonomouStuff: we appeared at the gathering of now-fellow Hexagon companies, and the introduction of a new initiative called Smart Autonomous Mobility.
The "autonomous island" at HxGN LIVE featured an AutonomouStuff Lexus RX450h automated research and development platform as its centerpiece, along with other companies joining the Smart Autonomous Mobility initiative, such as MSC Software, Leica Geosystems and Hexagon Positioning Intelligence.
The initiative represents Hexagon's comprehensive effort to enable autonomy across all industries through greater safety, improved productivity and maximum efficiency.
We also showcased our platform's demo capabilities, such as sensor visualization and Lidar Object Processing (LOP) software.
CES Asia
We exhibited at CES Asia under our parent company, Hexagon.
Our China team had the opportunity to static demo our WEY VV6 and our Lexus RX450h.
Both vehicles displayed an impressive set up, with the VV6 showing the real-time view of the three-dimensional point cloud data from the Velodyne VLP-32C, also known as the Ultra Puck. Attendees could see how this LiDAR sensor establishes the ground plane and tracks objects above it.
The Information's 2019 Vehicle Summit
Cameron Gieda, our Business Development Manager in Silicon Valley, was a panelist at the Information’s 2019 Vehicle Summit. The main topics included safety, measurements of success with autonomous systems and challenges to the industry.
Cameron discussed challenges in the hardware space, covering tropics such as what sensors are best, how well they work and where there is room for improvement. He additionally discussed the benefits and challenges of edge compute, thermal management and connectivity.
